Breast Surgery (Male)

The most common breast surgery for men is a breast reduction which is called gynecomastia and is normally carried out to deal with a problem colloquially referred to as “man boobs”. Large breasts in men are often believed to be a result of obesity, but this is not the only cause. Men, like women, can have an abnormal growth of glandular breast tissue, usually due to a hormone imbalance.

Other causes of enlarged male breasts include such things as excessive alcohol intake or the use of certain performance-enhancing drugs. In some cases, certain diseases, such as liver failure and cancer may cause this problem or the patient may have a congenital abnormality (a problem from birth). A more common recent phenomenon is dramatic weight loss in overweight and obese men especially in their middle age, which can cause the skin to sag
For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast reduction surgery may be considered to flatten the breast area.

Surgical Options
There are two main options which may be carried out separately or in combination.

Firstly for men with misshapen or uneven breasts, liposuction may be considered to reduce the size or reshape the beasts assuming that there is some elasticity in the patient’s skin and the areas to be treated are reasonably small in area.

For men with significant gynecomastia then the best results are achieved with breast reduction surgery. In some cases, the results may be enhanced by using liposuction to more easily and evenly remove fat prior to reshaping the skin in the chest area.

The Operation
The liposuction procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for gynecomastia that can give you the body you want, without the pain and risk of major surgery and without the need for general anaesthetic.

In the case of surgery, this usually takes around 90 minutes and will be performed under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make an incision around the nipple area and liposuction may be used to suck out excess fatty tissue. If there is a lot of tissue to remove, cuts may extend down the chest from the areola and the nipples may need to be repositioned.

In both cases, the patient may be required to stay in hospital overnight.
